Igbo Rap - "Igo mkpukpo"
Updated: May 8, 2020
One of the many roots of modern rap music can be traced to a genre of traditional music that is enjoyed by the Enuani people (an Igbo subgroup who live in modern-day Delta state) called "Igo mkpukpo". In this type of music a soloist would sing rhymes, proverbs and words of wisdom over a carefully-tuned beat. It is believed that slaves carried this music genre along with them to the New World, where it fused with other elements and evolved into the rap music which we recognize today.
